European Under 11 Badminton Championships

Nine year old Matthew Lightbody who trains with the Lisburn Alpha Badminton Club out of Ireland is the new Under 11 champion, and one to look out for in years to come. There were 450 entries from 14 countries, but he eased through the competition winning most matches by over 10 points. He knocked of the Dutch No.1 player Joran Kweekel 21-4,21-6 to capture the title.

Final Results: In a shocking upset in the men's final, Lee Chong Wei may have cost himself the tournament with several unforced errors. The veteran player from Denmark, Peter Gade Christensen looked in peak condition winning 21-18, 10-21, 21-17 in 53 minutes. Christensen earned $22,500 US while Chong Wei saw $9,600US.

Korean Open Badminton Championships Results, Seoul Korea

Men's Action: Lee Chong Wei is poised to become the first Malaysian to win the Korean Open men's singles title after another stellar performance defeating Wacha Prezmyslaw 21-17, 21-12 in 28 minutes. Chong Wei will meet Dane Peter-Gade Christensen. Christensen didn't even step onto the court in his semifinal as Indonesia’s Simon Santoso conceded a walkover. In five meetings Christensen has never been able to beat the Malaysian and recently lost to him last month, however Christensen is a three time title holder of the Korean Open crown.

World number 1 Lee Chong Wei (in photo) is looking for his third consecutive title after impressive wins in Kota Kinabalu last month and the Malaysian Open last weekend.  It took him 56 minutes to take care of South Korean junior Hong Ji-hoon 21-11, 17-21, 21-15 in the first round.

In a thrilling quarter-final match Sung Wang did everything he could to end Lee Chong Wei's impressive play, but it just wasn't enough in th end.  Sung Wang was up 8-4 in the third game, however Chong Wei nailed six points in a row to end the tally at  18-21, 21-7, 21-16.  It took 59 minutes for Chong Wei ti increase his career record against Sung Hwan to 9-1.
